Mayors and local councilors who signed symbolic statements on the union with Romania said they are intimidated. In a news conference at IPN, mayor of Cimislia town Gheorghe Raileanu presented a document from the State Chancellery, which says that he violated a number of laws, including the Constitution.

The mayor said that by the signed statement on the union with Romania they recognize the Union Act of 1918 in connection with the celebration of the union centenary this year. The legitimacy of the statement is confirmed by the right to opinion. “I’m a convinced unionist. The process started and no one can stop it. The question is when? The faster the union occurs, the less will the citizens of the Republic of Moldova suffer in all respects,” stated Gheorghe Raileanu, adding he is ready to go to court to defend his right to opinion.

Vasile Nastase, a member of the center for the protection of fundamental rights “Sirius”, said he supports the signatories of the statements on the union and called on the involved mayors and councilors to take concrete measures to hasten the union of the Romanian states. “I want Romania to take attitude to this state (Republic of Moldova) as we are Romanians since birth,” he noted.

“Sirius” member Anatolie Petrici said the voting by mayors and local councilors of statements on the union with Romania does not create legal effects and does not entail the exclusion of these communities from the composition of the Republic of Moldova.

So far, statements on the union with Romania have been signed by 40 Moldovan communities.

The association called on the people to come to the Great National Assembly Square on March 25 to vote a statement on the recognition of the Union Act of March 27, 1918. Also then, they should ask the two Parliaments, of Moldova and Romania, to adopt a decision on the recognitionnof the validity of the Union Act and on its implementation in the joint sitting that will take place in Bucharest on March 27.
