In five of the seven localities where mayoral elections were held on Sunday, November 17, the mayors were elected in the first round of voting. In the remaining two villages, a runoff vote involving the first two candidates who obtained most votes in the first round will be held in two weeks, IPN reports.
In Căușeni town, Alexandru Donțu, the candidate of the “Dignity and Truth Platform” Party, was elected mayor. According to preliminary data, he gained 67.73% of the ballot.
In Arionesti village of Dondușeni district, the mayor was elected in the first round. The Party of Socialists’ candidate Alina Vezitiu emerged victorious with 60.14% of the vote.
In Antonesti commune of Cantemir district, independent candidate Nicolai Parpolov was elected mayor with 57.78% of the poll.
In Clocușna village of Ocnița district, the elections were won by Tatiana Bucarchuk. 63.98% of the electors there voted for the candidate of the Party of Action and Solidarity.
In Popeștii de Jos village of Drochia district, the Party of Socialists’ candidate Vitali Gusachinski won the new local elections with 57.59% of the vote.
A mayoral runoff will be held in Ilichovka commune of Florești district, with independent candidate Fiodor Belyi, who won 37.78% of the poll, and the candidate of "Renaissance" Party Irina Volchuk, for whom 17.66% of the electors voted.
A runoff vote will also take place in Boșcana commune of Criuleni district. It will involve the Party of Action and Solidarity’s candidate Viorica Stăvilă, who won 43.53% of the vote, and independent candidate Sergei Catan, who gained 32.16% of the ballot.
According to the Electoral Code, the candidate for mayor is considered elected if he/she wins more than half of the validly cast votes. If no candidate meets this condition, a runoff vote is held in two weeks with the first two candidates who obtained the highest number of votes in the first ballot.
