Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca wants to hear the opinion of Chisinau's citizens majority regarding the construction of a church in the Kentford square, and will adopt a decision based on that opinion, reports Info-Prim Neo. “I don't believe it will be a bad thing for the city. On the contrary, I believe it is a good deed, but I want to hear the majority's opinion. It is true that many bad things were done to parks in the last 20 years, and I believe it has become a social stigma, as in, someone plots another wrongdoing. Nevertheless, this one will bring something good for the people and for the future of this city”, said the Mayor. The Mayor said that things were misunderstood from the very beginning, since someone spread rumors that the building of a Muslim church was planned, whereas the plans are for a Orthodox Christian church. According to the authorities, the Kentford square site was auctioned in accordance to a decision of the Chisinau Municipal Council, and awarded in 2009 under a 50-year lease. Thus, the authorities consider the construction absolutely legal. After several protests staged by activists opposing the construction, the local authorities reached an agreement with the builder, and the construction was ceased until the opinion of the citizens is heard. On Saturday, a group of activists tried to tear down the fence that surrounds the building site.
