The mayor of Cruzesti was sentenced to six years and six months in jail for abuse of power, forging of public acts and abuse of power, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to the prosecutors, in 2003-2004 the mayor released a plot of 0.1 hectares without signing a sale-purchase contract and without paying the required tax into the budget. He registered the plot in his name at the Local Cadastre Office, causing damage of over 24,700 lei to the public interests. In the period, the mayor falsified the decision of the local council and allocated illegally a plot of 0.1 hectares to his daughter, on which to build a house. He was also accused of registering a fictitious marriage between his daughter and her cousin, in breach of the Family Code, in order to justify the illegal allocation of the plot.
In 2009, the mayor was only fined 5,000 lei, but the sentence was appealed by prosecutors, who asked for eight years’ imprisonment for the mayor. As a result of a number of trials and new appeals, the mayor was sentenced to six years and six months in jail. The decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeals can be appealed.
