Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca admitted that the institution he heads is corrupt. In the program “Reply” on Prime TV channel, the mayor said the phenomenon of corruption in Moldova developed significantly over the last four years, IPN reports.
According to Chirtoaca, corruption is a very serious phenomenon that endangers the European integration process. It can be eliminated only when the public posts are held by persons with integrity. “Regretfully, Moldova lacks persons with integrity and corruption flourishes,” said the mayor
Dorin Chirtoaca accused the former Communist administration of creating conditions for corruption to develop. “The Communists implemented corruption schemes and those who replaced them applied these schemes further,” said the mayor. He added that he personally contributed to identifying and arresting ten corrupt functionaries of the Chisinau City Hall, who took €10,000 to €20,000 bribe, but all these persons are now free.
Communist councilor on the Chisinau Council Igor Lupulciuc told the same program that in a democratic state, the manager of the institution where persons are arrested on corruption charges resigns. “It’s serious when a mayor says that the functionaries of the City Hall are corrupt and continues to manage this institution. Two explanations are possible here – either the mayor is unable to manage or he is himself involved in corruption schemes,” he stated.
Dorin Chirtoaca replied that his resignation will not solve the problem of corruption.
