The Government endorsed the draft law to institute the Day of commemoration and reconciliation in memory of those who died in World War II on May 8, IPN reports.

The bill was drafted by a group of PAS MPs. This says that the “Day of victory and commemoration of heroes who died for the Independence of the Homeland (May 9)” is corrected as “Day of commemoration and reconciliation in memory of those who died in World War II (May 8)”.

“Such a bill had to be proposed given the confusion that still persists as to the real date (May 8) of the end of World War II on the European continent and the May 9 date imposed by Stalin and the USSR in the Socialist camp in order to claim a key role in the victory against the former Nazi allies,” says the draft law.

Starting with 2006, the Republic of Moldova in May has celebrated Europe Day –an event that symbolizes peace and unity on the European continent. As from 2017, by Parliament decision, May 9 was instituted as Europe Day.

The initiative is aimed at aligning the Republic of Moldova with the community of democratic states on the European continent, such as the UK, France, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Norway, the Baltic States, and Germany, which celebrate the victory against fascism on May 8. France decreed the celebration of the event by a law in October 1981, while the United States introduced Victory in Europe Day back in 1948.
