Parliament voted to approve in a first reading an amendment extending from three to five years the maximum term for leasing farmland, IPN reports.

If the land is leased for the maximum period, the lease contracts will have to be registered with the cadaster authorities, and if for shorter periods the leaseholder will have the option to register it with the local authorities.

MP Ion Balan, one of the initiators, said the amendment was needed because re-registering farmland every three years involved money and time costs, in addition to the inconvenience that often landlords are abroad. Extending the term, he argued, would mean guarantees and facilities for both parties.
