The maternity hospital of the Cahul District Hospital was renovated and outfitted with new equipment to the value of US$175,000 with support from the United States and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). “The renovation and installation of high-tech medical devices and equipment will ensure better treatment conditions for patients and will enable the health workers to work further,” said Lilia Postolachi, acting director of the Cahul District Hospital, being quoted by IPN.

Saidkasim Sakhipov, UNFPA Emergency Coordinator, said that owing to the support of the U.S. Government, UNFPA equipped seven maternity hospitals and two specialized hospitals in Moldova. “The Cahul District Hospital is one of the nine hospitals and it is fully equipped with maternity, surgical, gynecology wards and an intensive care unit. Increasing the capacities of these nine perinatal centers means 15,000 safe births each year assisted with state-of-the-art equipment. Also, hundreds of critically ill newborns will be saved thanks to the modern equipment that is being installed in intensive care units. The UN Population Fund is particularly pleased to support Moldovan doctors, who show self-abnegation and perseverance in times of crisis. With this equipment, they will offer high-quality services both to women in Moldova and to Ukrainian refugees,” said Saidkasim Sakhipov.

U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Kent D. Logsdon said the renovated hospital will offer women all over the region better access to prenatal and postnatal medical services and to care for specific maternal and newborn health problems. This is an investment by the U.S. Government and the American people in health, safety and welfare of women and families in the Republic of Moldova. It is an example of a strong and long-lasting partnership between Moldova and the U.S. aimed at addressing immediate challenges and building a democratic, prosperous and safe future in Moldova,” stated the diplomat.

Ion Prisăcaru, secretary of state of the Ministry of Health, said the Cahul District Hospital forms part of a network of strategic perinatal centers in Moldova, serving over 100,000 people. About 1,000 babies are born at the maternity hospital each year. Owing to the support of the U.S. Government and UNFPA, programs are implemented and medical institutions are outfitted, especially with regard to reproduction and infrastructure of perinatal centers.

The hospital in Cahul is the third medical institution of the nine that are outfitted with medical equipment for sexual and reproductive health. The total value of the equipment provided by UNFPA for the whole system is about US$4 million. This is to be installed by the end of this year.
