What the Republic of Moldova receives from the European Union is based on the logic of integration. If all the requirements imposed by the European Union are met, Moldova will come closer to the status of candidate and then of member state of the EU. Such statements were made by Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca in the public discussion “Moldovan-Romanian relations: evolutions, expectations, quality measurements” that was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

According to the ambassador, the burden of Moldova’s European perspectives is on Moldova’s, not on the EU’s shoulders. The EU does not pursue now the absolute goal of extension as it aims to strengthen itself. “We must speak about the state Republic of Moldova. It forms part of the neighborhood policy as a partner and is the object of the Eastern Partnership. The economic integration and political association is the Eastern Partnership’s objective. This means greater synchronization with the EU policies, not yet full assumption of these,” stated Marius Lazurca.

He noted that the European Union is the most prestigious political, economic and social club in the world. “It’s good for Moldova to be in the ‘antechamber’ of this club, not on the street. This position is honorable for Moldova and brought it benefits. The Republic of Moldova, if it uses the instruments of the Eastern Partnership, of the neighborhood policy, it Europeanizes itself and becomes more compatible with the economic, political and social values of the EU and closer to the status of candidate country and, to the limit, of member country,” said the diplomat.

Marius Lazurca gave as example Croatia, which, before becoming an EU member, took the decision to behave as if it was a member state already. “The Republic of Moldova should also behave as if it is an EU member state and this will put it in a better situation than if it adopts the position of ‘not a member’,” he said.

The public discussion of April 29 forms part of the 53rd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with the support of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
