The Transnistrian conflict will never be settled by Chisinau and Tiraspol alone. The settlement requires the involvement of Moldova's international partners, stated Moldova's acting President Marian Lupu, Info-Prim Neo reports. The statement was made on Wednesday, March 2, following a religious service at the Metropolitan Cathedral in commemoration of those who died in the 1992 Nistru war. “We should ascertain and admit that through dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol alone the Transnistrian issue will never be resolved. Throughout these 19 years that passed, it has never been only an internal problem of Moldova, but a regional problem with implications for European security. In this 'frozen' unsettled conflict, we obviously need a positive influence from our partners involved in the 5+2 negotiations”, said Marian Lupu. The president believes that the Transnistrian dispute should be overcome through diplomatic means in order to avoid another military conflict. “Both sides have made mistakes. Some wrong steps have been made outside of Moldova, too. The settlement of the dispute needs intellectual efforts, dedication, but also international support. While remembering the past, we should also look at our present and future”, added Marian Lupu. March 2, the date on which the Nistru armed conflict started 19 years ago, is Memorial Day in Moldova.
