“We should not hurry to distribute the posts. This is not the most important thing. What shall we do with the democratic system? Will we improve it or continue to build an authoritarian system? What shall we do with the economy? Will we liberalize it or focus on narrow corporate interests. These questions are not simple, but are very important. Before signing a document on the formation of a coalition, the PDM wants to be sure that there will be a balanced mechanism of the power, no matter what kind of coalition it will be – center-right or center-left,” the leader of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu said during a televised program last Sunday, quoted by Unimedia.
According to Marian Lupu, the consultations with the PCRM go quicker. “It is harder to discuss with the right-wing parties both for objective and subjective reasons. I will not elaborate. A lot will depend on the rhetoric of the dialogue partners,” he stated.
“Our aim is to find the best solution so as to bring the political crisis to an end. It is not important how the three persons who will hold important posts will work, but how the whole system will work. I don’t want a repeat of last year’s situation, when one was the elder brother, while the other one was the younger brother. Authoritarian governance is not the Democratic Party’s aim,” Lupu said.
The Democrat leader thinks it is now not opportune to amend the Constitution’s article on the election of the head of state. “Judging by the behavior of the partners, both from the left wing and the right wing, I cannot say that I’m optimistic. If there had been no narrow party interests, the bill providing for the election of the President is several stages, by decreasing the necessary number of votes would have been adopted last year. I’m not sure that each party is ready to go further,” said the president of the PDM. “There is also another solution for electing the head of state – a broad coalition. It is not excluded that there will be no Opposition. It is not right when some of the parties say they will never cooperate with X or Y. This shows that we are far from Europe. Last year, the PDM made a huge compromise when it disregarded the narrow party interests. We would like to see our colleagues doing the same.”
The leader of the PDM made it clear that he disapproves of the authoritarian line in the Government. “If somebody holds 51% of the seats in the Cabinet, they will take decisions as they want. But there should be a balance. Last year, we believed the words of certain politicians, but those words were empty,” said Lupu.
Asked about possible early elections in a year, Marian Lupu said they would represent a catastrophe for Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting Unimedia.
