The result of new negotiations between pro-European parliamentary parties, which will be held with the aim of designating a new candidate for Prime Minister, will be announced by January 11, the chairman of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu said on January 4, IPN reports.

Marian Lupu noted the PDM two weeks ago announced that it will not vote for the Sturza Cabinet. “Therefore, the result could have been predicted even if a quorum had been present. The PDM had ¾ of its MPs present in the assembly hall. A colleague of ours came to the sitting on crutches as he suffered an accident while training,” he said, adding six of the Democratic MPs asked to be allowed not to attend the sitting and he permitted them to deal with family problems.

Lupu stated the Democrats focused on the subsequent actions and today or tomorrow will inform President Nicolae Timofti about their intention to resume negotiations to reach a consensus on the formation of a parliamentary majority. The results of these talks will be made public by January 11.

Marian Lupu said the candidate that will be nominated for Prime Minister must enjoy the support of a parliamentary majority so that the Government could be invested. “We cannot now speak about a candidate as we haven’t yet reached an agreement,” he stated.

The special sitting of the legislature, where the MPs were to give a vote of confidence to the program and the governmental team proposed by candidate for Prime Minister Ion Sturza, didn’t take place because of a lack of quorum. The Cabinet must be voted in by January 29 or the legislature will be dissolved and early parliamentary elections will be announced.
