Democratic MP Marian Lupu, the only candidate running in the presidential elections, was not voted in as head of state on Tuesday, November 10. Only 53 MPs of the 101 voted for him. To be elected as President of Moldova, a candidate needs 61 votes. The Parliament will organize a second round of voting within 30 days, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Today, we convinced ourselves again that Marian Lupu is the most suitable candidate. I'm sure that Moldova will have a President. Marian Lupu will be elected as head of state regardless of the PCRM's wishes,” Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said after the special sitting of the Parliament.
The special commission for the election of the head of state said that 53 votes of the 101 were used and declared valid. The parliamentary group of the PCRM composed of 48 MPs did not take part in the vote.
