A parliamentary majority was constituted. The announcement was made after the consultations held by President Nicolae Timofti with groups of MPs in the evening of January 11. According to the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu, the statement on the formation of a parliamentary majority was signed by 56 MPs. The new majority is to propose a candidate for Prime Minister to the head of state, IPN reports.

The statement was signed by the parliamentary groups of the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party, representatives of the Social-Democratic Platform and a group of MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party. “The majority consists of 56 MPs for now, but there are serious reasons to believe that the number wil increase tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and we could have an absolute majority. This will not only invest the Government, but will also represent a platform that will work on a permanent basis and will provide constant political support to the Cabinet,” stated Marian Lupu.

He also said that the parliamentary majority will present a candidate for premiership to the head of state on January 13. “It is a coalition-based parliamentary majority. Thus, the Government will represent a reflection of this majority. Those who will form part of this majority will evidently be represented in the governmental bodies,” said the Democrats’ leader.

“I believe in our colleagues who assumed this responsibility and hope that things in the Republic of Moldova will improve. Moldova needs now political stability, a functional Government and Parliament more than ever. It’s time to deal with the problems we undertook,“ said the Liberals’ leader Mihai Ghimpu.

President Nicolae Timofti is to nominate a candidate for premiership on January 14 at the latest, while Parliament must invest the new Government by January 29. Otherwise, the head of state will dissolve the legislative body and will call early legislative elections.
