Marian Lupu chose PDM as it was the most generous

The president of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) Marian Lupu, who was named to the post several days ago, said that he chose the PDM “because it was the most generous”. He made the statement in an interview for the Romanian newspaper “Evenimentul Zilei” (“Event of the Day”), which was published on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The other parties made more specific invitations: I shall come with two-three persons. They made me think that I could play the role of an electoral engine. The PDM made a very clear offer: come and head the party,” Marian Lupu said, adding that he feels well inside the PDM. Asked if it is a project of the PCRM as it is rumored in Chisinau, the former Speaker said that the rumors are elements of the electoral fight and that the PDM is an independent, European project. If no party wins the majority after the July 29 elections, Marian Lupu says that the only solution will be a national coalition government. “I cannot consider a bilateral PDM – PCRM alliance a solution because the PCRM does not know what political partnership is. It only knows how to devour its partners, like the female spiders do,” Lupu said. If the Communists obtain 52 seats and form the executive by themselves, the PDM will consider whether to field him as a candidate for presidency or not. “A head of state without instruments for cooperation with the executive cannot bring things to normality.” Speaking about the party’s foreign policy, Lupu said that the reestablishment of a normal dialogue with Romania, the cancellation of the visa regime with Romania and the continuation of the talks over signing a border regime treaty are the major objectives of the PDM. The European integration is a priority for the PDM, but Lupu says that partnership relations should be developed with such CIS member states as Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Marian Lupu left the PCRM on June 10, saying he does not share some of the Communists’ positions. On July 19, he was elected as president of the PDM. The former leader of the party Dumitru Diacov became the party’s president of honor. According to the last Public Opinion Barometer, Marian Lupu is trusted by 38% of the population. The PCRM leader Vladimir Voronin obtained the same percentage. The PDM would poll 9.6% of the vote.
