The Russian Federation will not support any contender in the parliamentary elections that will take place in the Republic of Moldova on February 24, 2019, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Maria Zakharova was quoted by IPN as saying in a videoconference.

The representative of the Russian Ministry noted that Russia’s positon not to support anyone is a principled one as it is an internal matter of a sovereign state. As to the expectations of the period after the elections that should be independent and not influenced from outside, according to Maria Zakharova, she said the Russian Federation expects the Moldovan-Russian relations to develop.

Asked if Russia will continue to support the Transnistrian region, if the situation concerning the joint control on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border generates particular developments, Maria Zakharova said the Russian Federation offered regular support to the region even when it was the Russian state that needed support, but it never forgot about the Transnistrian region.

“This situation is under control and given that a sovereign state definitely has the right to apply the own policy, this should not be aimed at the own people and should not hit, from humanitarian point, the people who in time went already through difficult patches,” stated Maria Zakharova.

She also said that the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict is the most difficult problem she witnessed in her professional experience. According to her, it won’t be right to forget the support provided by the Russian Federation as the Russian state acted to protect its citizens first and foremost.
