Members and sympathizes of the Party of Socialists on May 9 mounted a march in memory of soldiers who took part in World War II. The column of people led by Socialist MPs marched along the streets of Chisinau, from the National Opera House up to the Memorial Complex “Eternity” where they laid flowers near the “Eternal Fire” and commemorated those killed by observing a moment’s silence, IPN reports.
The participants in the march carried photos of relatives who fought in World War II and the Victory flag and Moldova’s flag as well as flowers and the Ribbon of Saint George. Some of the marchers wore the Soviet military uniform, military caps and white dresses in respect and in memory of the relatives killed in battle.
The Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon said in the event that almost every family has members who took part in the war and this day is thus holy for the absolute majority of Moldovans. “In the families of each of us, there are persons who died in the Great Patriotic War. For my family, taking part in the memory march became a tradition. I’m glad that the number of those who support us goes up,” stated the MP.
Members and sympathizes of the Party of Communists also laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”.
A similar event was staged in Balti town by the local authorities. Mayor of Balti Renato Usatyi said that owing to the war veterans, the children now go to school and create new families. “On this day, we must kneel down before you, dear veterans. We are obliged to do everything possible to prevent a repeat of the events witnessed during the years of World War II,” he stated.
The participants in the event in Balti laid flowers at the monument “Liberators of the Town of 1944”, at the monument to Boris Glavan, at the nine commemorative plaques of soldiers-liberators and at the Military Glory Memorial.
