Man who raped pregnant woman in Chisinau gets 18 years

The man who raped a pregnant woman in the yard of the Maternity Hospital No.2 in Chisinau last July was sentenced to 18 years in jail. He will also pay damages of 80,000 lei to the woman, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Rascani district court was found guilty on two counts – rape and violent actions of sexual character,” Maria Vieru, the head of the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, said in a news conference. The incident happened on July 11, 2011. The 27-year-old pregnant woman went to the maternity hospital for an examination. In the hospital’s yard, she met a man who told her that his wife gave birth to a baby, but the doctors did not allow him to enter. On the pretext of wanting to give his wife a parcel, the man lured the woman behind the block, where he raped her. The rapist was arrested at a night club in two weeks. He is a 40-year-old man from Chisinau municipality. He is divorced and was earlier tried for theft.
