A 40-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after he set fire to the apartment where his concubine and his 9-year-old daughter were confined out of jealousy. The child managed to escape through the window of the room, while the woman died poisoned, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it happened this January in the municipality of Balti. The defendant lived in an apartment with the 36-year-old woman and their minor daughter. A few weeks before the incident, while the concubine was working abroad, the man prepared bottles with flammable substances.

When his concubine returned, he hammered a nail and blocked the door of the room where his daughter was, then he also blocked the entrance door to the apartment. The defendant sprayed the floor of the hallway with gasoline and set fire to the apartment. While the woman was trying to free herself, he kicked her over her hands. The woman got poisoned by fumes, while the daughter managed to flee through the window and seek help from her grandmother.

The defendant will serve his sentence in a closed prison. The sentence is not final and can be appealed.
