A 45-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison for influence peddling. At the end of December 2022, he asked for €1,600 euros from a woman to help her obtain a driver's license, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the defendant told the woman that he had influence over employees of the Chisinau Driver Qualification Section of the Public Services Agency. He was to persuade them to ensure that the woman passed the driver qualification exam without the latter being physically present. The man received the first installment of the amount, €1,000, and a few days later the rest of the money. Later, claiming that particular difficulties arose, he also requested and received 3,000 lei from the woman.
The woman said that she met the defendant at a car park, when she intended to buy a car. In a discussion with him, she told him that she finished the driving school, but was afraid to take the exams at the PSA. Then the defendant suggested that he could get the license without her physically taking the exam. The woman filed a complaint with the police after she gave the man the requested amount, but did not get a license.
At the hearing, the defendant admitted his guilt and the criminal case against him was examined according to a simplified procedure.
