A 23-year-old man from Ceadâr-Lunga municipality of ATU Gagauzia was sentenced to 16 years in jail for trafficking a teenage girl from Hâncești to Turkey for commercial sexual exploitation. He told the 17-year-old girl that she will work as a dancer. The young man has served time before and is now investigated in another criminal case, IPN has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
He contacted the girl who was 17 in 2015 through a social networking site. The girl worked as a cook at a club in Chisinau and could not help her family with her salary of 2,400 lei a month. He promised her she will get US$ 1,000 if she works as a dancer in Turkey.
When in Turkey, she was forced to provide sex services when she came of age. She was paid less than half of the promised sum. When she refused to work further, she was beaten and threatened with death.
The girl managed to return home after almost a year and denounced the man to the authorities. This contacted her mother and threatened her with death.
The sentence can be challenged in a higher court.
