Smoking in bed proved fatal for a 52-year-old man, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning after his bedclothes caught fire from a smoldering cigarette. The fire occurred in Cioc-Maidan village, Comrat, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to sources from the mayor’s office of Cioc-Maidan, the man had never been married and did not have children. He had been out of work for many years and did not have a home. For a period, he lived in the house of a family that helped him. When the family decided to sell the house, the mayor’s office allowed him to live temporarily in an old house, where the fire happened. The man had relatives in the village, but did not communicate with them. Villagers said the man was most probably drunk when the tragedy struck. He was found dead on the floor. Allegedly, he woke up and tried to go out, but did not manage to. The 372 fires that happened in Moldova so far this year resulted in 44 deaths. Three of the victims were children.
