A man aged 72 from Hagimus village of Căușeni district died when he detonated a grenade in front of the door of his house. The police are considering suicide as one of the versions. According to press officer of the Căușeni Police Inspectorate Olesea Gherman, the case was reported by the man’s wife at about 1pm. The woman told the police that her husband earlier tried to kill himself.

Contacted by IPN for details, the mayor of Hagimus Anatolie Iepure said the man had health problems and started to feel worse. He lost sight and considered he was a burden for his wife and therefore he probably decided to commit suicide. He detonated a grenade right before his house. He could easily come into possession of a grenade as their village is situated close to Tighina, where fighting took place in 1992 and some of the inhabitants still have munitions. The man didn’t take part in the war, but could take the grenade from relatives or veterans.

The villagers knew him as a decent, hardworking man. He lived with his wife only as their children are mature and have their own families. Recently, the family lost the wife of his brother, who succumbed to COVID.

No one else was hurt in the explosion.
