A citizen of Georgia tried to take 88 collector coins dating from 1890 – 1960 out of Moldova without declaring them and now risks remaining without them. The man aged 37 was a passenger of the Chisinau – Istanbul flight.
During the luggage check, the border police found 50 coins in the bag of the Georgian man. Following additional checks, there were found 38 more coins in his shoes.
Tatiana Bogdan Șompol, spokeswoman for the Customs Service, has told IPN that all the coins that have a cultural or historical value should be declared in accordance with the legislation. Documents issued by the responsible institutions are required for their transportation outside the country. In this case, a document from the Ministry of Culture, confirming that the collector coins belonged to the transporting person, was necessary.
The coins were seized, while the man faces a fine.
