Man arrested for corrupting customs officers

A man from Ungheni district was apprehended by prosecutors for allegedly influencing customs officers in order to illegally bring vehicles from the EU into the Republic of Moldova. The individual asked for €400 to €600 from the people he was helping, IPN reports.

According to prosecutors in Balti, the suspect allegedly claimed that he had influence over employees of the Sculeni customs post and can make them accept the temporary introduction of two cars, registered in European countries. For his services, the man asked for amounts of €450 and €600.

Furthermore, the man supposedly intermediated the illegal introduction of another car by a person who did not have the right to bring cars registered abroad into Moldova. In this case, he requested €400 and was given the money under the guidance of officers of the National Anticorruption Center.

The suspect was detained for 72 hours and searches are to be carried out in his home.
