Georgia and the Republic of Moldova face common challenges related to the integrity and sovereignty of the country, especially owing to the occupation by the Russian troops of a part of the territory. To overcome the problem, the countries should engage the international partners in the negotiation process, the Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze stated in a press briefing in Chisinau on October 5.
According to the Georgian official, 20% of the territory of Georgia is occupied by the Russian Federation.
The same day, in a move to improve the exchange of information on security standards, there was signed an agreement on the mutual protection and exchange of classified information between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of Georgia, IPN reports.
Mamuka Bakhtadze said Georgia, as the Republic of Moldova, pursues the goal of integrating into the European Union and the entry by his country into the EU will be to Moldova’s advantage too. Georgia is interested in developing the economic and commercial relations with the Republic of Moldova so as to reach a maximum level.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip said the political and economic relations between the two states are at a very high level. He thanked his Georgian counterparty for supporting the UN Resolution that envisions the withdrawal of the foreign troops from Moldova’s territory.
According to Pavel Filip, the relationship with Georgia is also important on the EU dimension. “The existence of common understanding of the European values makes us help each other and this is very important,” he stated. As to the economic dimeson, the Premier noted that Chisinau will soon host the meeting of the intergovernmental commission for economic problems and a business forum will be held as part of this.
Moldova on October 5 hosted the meeting of heads of government of the member states of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) that includes Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. This year Moldova has held the presidency of GUAM.
