The candidate for President of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu called on her Liberal opponent Mihai Ghimpu to withdraw from the electoral race and to support her if he does not want Igor Dodon to win the presidential elections. The call was made in electoral debates staged by the public TV channel “Moldova 1”, IPN reports. In response, Liberal heavyweight Dorin Chirtoaca, Mayor of Chisinau, who represented Mihai Ghimpu at the debate, said he agrees on condition that Sandu signs for the union.
“We will withdraw from the electoral race in your favor only if you sign for the union here and we will struggle together for achieving it,” stated Chirtoaca.
For her part, Maia Sandu replied that not the President is the one who should want the union, but the people. She didn’t give a clear answer either to her opponent Ana Gutu, who asked her if she is for the union with Romania. “My goal is to fight corruption,” she said.
Dorin Chirtoaca accused Maia Sandu of lack of respect towards the supporters of the Democratic Party. “I understand that you do not like the administration of the PDM, but you should not attack everyone as if you have the votes secured. Lupu’s withdrawal will strengthen Dodon’s position,” he stated.
Maia Sandu replied acidly: “I should understand that if Ghimpu becomes President, the situation in the country will be managed as well as in the municipality of Chisinau?”.
