The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu noted that after the meeting with EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, she can say with certitude that there is an acute state of concern in Brussels about the invalidation of the Chisinau early mayoral elections and the government’s deviations from the democratic principles. The PAS leader and her colleagues of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA) and the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) had a number of meetings with Europeans officials in Strasbourg, IPN reports.
In a posting published on Facebook after the meeting with Johannes Hahn, Maia Sandu said the European Union will not support an antidemocratic and anti-citizen regime, while the unfavorable consequences will appear without delay. “The government’s irresponsible behavior distances Moldova from the EU. We, all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, should oppose the establishment of dictatorship and the isolation of our country from Europe,” stated the politician.
In the evening of July 3, Maia Sandu, Andrei Nastase and Viorel Cibotaru had a meeting with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk. Maia Sandu said they discussed the critical situation that appeared in Moldova following the taking of abusive decisions to invalidate the elections and the dangers posed by the current regime to the country’s citizens. “Mister Tusk assured us that the situation in the Republic of Moldova is a priority issue for the EU institutions and that these will do their best to protect the citizens of our country,” noted the PAS leader.
The three politicians also met with Polish Conservative MEP Anna Elżbieta Fotyga in Strasbourg. “The situation in the Republic of Moldova, after the invalidation and nullification of the elections for the Chisinau City Hall, has taken a dangerous direction,” stated the MEP, being quoted in a press release of the PPPDA.
The leaders of the PAS, PPPDA and PLDM also held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland. According to the PAS leader, the discussion was important and centered on the illegalities committed by the government, which tries to mislead the international partners by saying that the elections were invalidate owing to the legislation.
“The government is trying to falsify the truth, misinforming the development partners that the early mayoral elections in Chisinau were invalidated because of the legislation that needs to be amended. But the truth is different: the government cannot allow an anti-system person to manage the Chisinau City Hall and to unveil and stop the corruption schemes of the real estate mafia that operates in the capital city,” stated Andrei Nastase, being quoted in a press release of the PPPDA.
The Moldovan opposition leaders transmitted to the European officials the resolution adopted at the protest staged in central Chisinau on July 1, by which the protesters demanded to validate the Chisinau early local elections, to annul the mixed electoral system and to hold accountable the judges who decided to invalidate the elections. The document says that if the government does not take immediate measures to fulfil the demands during the current session of Parliament, peaceful civil disobedience actions will be taken.
