The adoption of the Sovereignty Declaration 31 years ago by the members of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic was a major political event that signaled a first step towards building the future state Republic of Moldova. By such a step, together with the Baltic people, Ukrainians, Georgians or Russians, Moldova renounced the totalitarianism and adhered to the values of the democratic state, President Maia Sandu stated on the occasion of the Sovereignty Day of the Republic of Moldova that is marked on June 23, IPN reports.

According to Maia Sandu, each of the 15 former Soviet republics used the obtained sovereignty their way. For the Republic of Moldova, as 31 years ago, this was the natural and necessary condition for the existence of statehood, the document that proclaimed the preeminence of the law and stipulated the unitary and undivided character of the state.

President Sandu noted the events through which the Republic of Moldova went then, including the attempts to establish an authoritarian regime or a regime to capture the state and the institutions in favor of private or group interests, show that democracy should be defended daily and freedom means not only a statement.

“Democracy and freedom mean a continuous fight that should support the citizen’s right to decide the present and the future freely and unforced by anyone. This is what our sovereignty is and should further be,” said President Sandu.
