The common candidate of the center-right for President Maia Sandu said the first thing she will do if she is elected Head of State will be to withdraw the Order of the Republic conferred on Vlad Plahotniuc. She will also demand to pull out the Russian troops from the Transnistrian region and to conduct an international investigation into the theft committed in the banking system. She made such statements in the public debate “What kind of President is society looking for? What kind of society does the President need?”, staged by IPN News Agency.

Maia Sandu said the withdrawal of the Order of the Republic awarded to Vlad Plahotniuc, whom she named the biggest thief in the Republic of Moldova, is the simplest and most necessary method of rehabilitating the people. The Republic of Moldova needs an independent, upright and intelligent President - independent in order to satisfy the needs of the people, not of someone from behind; upright so as not to be blackmailed by acts of corruption, and intelligent so as to become involved in many areas and prevent abuses on the part of state institutions, given that most of these are controlled by one person, and to make them work for the benefit of the people.

The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” noted that corruption is the main cause of poverty. That’s why the fight against corruption by naming upright and honest people will be a priority in the President’s working program. In this connection, Maia Sandu said she accepts to be subject to any investigation, stressing only an upright person can break this vicious circle and fight corruption. As to the poll results, she stated that they agreed to take a decision based on these because they show best people’s wishes and thanked the sympathizers and members of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” for supporting her candidacy for the presidency.

Maia Sandu said in the presidential elections she counts on people who believe in democracy and who respect the rights of all the people regardless of the spoken language and political views, etc. She noted she is not financed by someone and does not receive instructions. She bears responsibility only before the voters and wants to build a state that will promote the interests of the people. For the purpose, unity is needed so as to remove those corrupt from power. Asked who she will vote in eventual runoff elections if she does not reach them, Maia Sandu said in such a situation she could say that the elections were rigged and thus cannot be validated.

The electoral public debate “What kind of President is society looking for? What kind of society does the President need?” forms part of a series of debates that involve candidates for the office of President of the Republic of Moldova. It is the 64th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized by IPN with the assistance of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
