President Maia Sandu said that following the consecutive rises in fuel prices in the recent past, it can be ascertained that the actions of oil sellers are concerted and the solution is to return to the capping of fuel prices. The Competition Council should act immediately and freeze the prices, IPN reports.

After the meeting of the Supreme Security Council that lasted for about six hours, President Sandu said it is rather clear for everyone that the actions of oil sellers are concerted, but the responsible authorities haven’t fulfilled their duties, primarily in February-June 2020. The prices on the international market decreased in particular periods, but the responsible institutions didn’t apply the market mechanisms that would have favored consumers.

According to President Sandu, legislative amendments are needed to restore the capping of fuel prices. The Competition Council should freeze prices immediately as this is a case of concerted actions.

This week, oil sellers raised again fuel prices after doing so for several times since last December.

Since March 2019, oil sellers have set by themselves the retail prices of oil products within an annual markup of 10%.
