Maia Sandu was reelected as president of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), which she has headed since its foundation in May 2016. In the first congress of the party held on September 10, Maia Sandu, who was the only candidate fielded for the party’s presidency, polled 332 votes of the total of 335 delegates who took part in the congress. Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, Dan Perciun and Mihai Popusoi were chosen as vice presidents of the PAS, while Igor Grosu was reelected as PAS secretary general, IPN reports.

In her speech in the opening of the event, Maia Sandu described the state of affairs in the Republic of Moldova as disastrous. She noted that the ruling regime discredited the rule of law principle and impoverished the population, making it to leave the country, divided society and endangers the country’s European course. The current government avoids doing reforms and this is proven by the high-level corruption that is deep-rooted in all the areas of activity.

Maia Sandu said the ruling Democratic Party formed an undeclared alliance with the Party of Socialists. The current government does not have a strategy for developing the Republic of Moldova. It uses the geopolitical struggle to hide the abuses it commits. “We should give a determined blow to this ruling mafia clan and should bring the Republic of Moldova back to the right path. We do not have the right to yield to despair,” she stated.

According to the resolution adopted at the end of the congress, the first-class preparation for the next elections is the key objective of the PAS. The party will insistently demand to restore the old, party-list proportional representation system that would enable the PAS to form a parliamentary majority together with other pro-European, anti-oligarchic parties. The PAS pleads for the establishment of a strategic partnership with the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” and for cooperation with other parties that share the national and European values so as to together struggle against the ruling PDM-PSRM regime.
