President Maia Sandu recommended the Government to intensify customs and border control by developing the capacity to check all the units of transport, the technical and special investigation capacities so as to efficiently detect drugs. The request was made following discussions on smuggling of drugs into Moldova held by the Supreme Security Council, IPN reports.
President Sandu also requested the Government to consider, together with the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Customs Service, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, the opportunity of creating a group that would fight any kind of smuggling.
According to Maia Sandu, there are no real estimates as to how large smuggling in drugs in Moldova is now and it is not possible to determine how efficient the efforts made by the institutions to fight this phenomenon are. There are cases concerning large-scale contraband pending in court, but they are delayed. The state institution should combine forces so as to combat smuggling.
