The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu invited Prime Minister Pavel Filip to come to a debate on the public TV channel Moldova 1 and tell the country’s citizens if the government is able to meet at least six conditions that would enable to hold free and fair parliamentary elections this autumn.
The proposal was formulated in a news conference on May 11. Maia Sandu said she made approaches to the authorities and suggested measures that should be taken to ensure free and fair legislative elections, but these approaches were every time ignored, IPN reports.
“As we were ignored, we decided to go to international institutions. The same questions were addressed to Premier Filip in Brussels, but he said that he does not understand our objections to the way in which the parties and election campaigns are funded. We invite Pavel Filip to a debate on the public TV channel where he would respond to our concerns before the citizens,” said the politician.
The members of the Party “Action and Solidarity” enumerated six proposals that, according to them, can ensure free and fair elections. Among these are: to amend the legislation on election campaign funding; to ban the financing of parties through foundations associated with politicians; to install video cameras in all the polling places.
The leader of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc, after the weekly meeting of the party on May 8, said he requested his colleagues from Parliament to set up a working group that would organize the elections in the most democratic and transparent way possible. Maia Sandu said she is not interested in forming part of that group. “We are not concerned about a mimicked dialogue. We want a concrete discussion before the people, not obscure discussions or discussions with the involvement of commentators that would ‘jam’ them,” she stated.
