President Maia Sandu promulgated amendments to the law on advocacy. She said she took such a decision after she discussed the provisions of the new law with representatives of the community of lawyers of Moldova last week, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.
“It was a useful and necessary debate as some of the proposed amendments generated disagreement among the representatives of the guild, which is something normal in a democratic society,” stated Maia Sandu.
She noted she decided to promulgate the new version of the law after listening to the opinions for and against it and took note of its potential risks and benefits.
“It is a law that can solve some of the problems of the legal practice system. At the same time, we will ask the new Parliament to review particular provisions that arose controversy, like those that refer to the entry to the bar,” said President Maia Sandu.
The amendments to the law on advocacy were adopted by the MPs on April 23, 2021. Under the law, an ad-hoc despite resolution commission consisting of five lawyers chosen at random will reexamine the results of the legal practice admission and qualification exams at each stage. There will be determined the rules of communicating the documents issued by the self-governing legal practice bodies, with the publication of documents and information on the website of the Lawyers Union being given priority.
