President Maia Sandu said that on June 23, 1990, when the Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted, the Republic of Moldova set off on its road to independence, to the right to decide by itself the fate and the future. “Over the past 33 years, many obstacles have been witnessed on the development path of the Republic of Moldova, but our people remained united and firm in their wish to be free, to lead a dignified life and to raise the children in peace,” President Sandu said in a message issued on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty, IPN reports.
In her message, the official noted that through the Declaration of Sovereignty, nationality was instituted, the basis for designing the Constitution was laid, the resolve to directly take part in the European process for cooperation and security was confirmed and, what is more important, it was stipulated that the people are the source and bearers of sovereignty.
President Sandu also said that 33 years ago, the Republic of Moldova decided to separate itself from the Soviet regime and to fulfill its dream to become a state with the rule of law in which the citizens live in harmony and with confidence in tomorrow.
“Now the Republic of Moldova decided to join the European family for the same reasons for which we have struggled for sovereignty, independence, freedom – for our family and children to be able to live happily at home. We managed to do many things together, despite the difficulties. We will succeed this time again. Our path is a just one,” noted Maia Sandu.
