The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu informed the Central Election Commission about external funding enjoyed by the Party of Socialists (PSRM) led by Igor Dodon. Maia Sandu makes reference to a journalistic investigation and requests the CEC to take the required measures, in accordance with the law, IPN reports.
According to the politician, in February 2016 a company from Bahamas transferred €1.5 million to the account of a Moldovan company. Of this money, over 20 million lei was collected from banks in cash by the company’s manager. Afterward, the money reached private individuals who turned out to be donors of the Party of Socialists.
“Given these findings, we can conclude that it is a case of indirect financing of the PSRM from outside Moldova’s borders,” Maia Sandu says in her notification. According to her, Article 36 of the Election Code bans not only direct financing from abroad, but also indirect financing from outside the county. Also, Article 69 provides that if an electoral competitor uses external financial resources, the Central Election Commission asks the court to annul the registration of this competitor as an election runner.
The PSRM hasn’t yet commented on these accusations.
