President Maia Sandu spoke about the war in Ukraine and its socioeconomic consequences for the neighboring countries and the whole world during her working visit to Athens. In the Annual Economist Governmental Roundtable, the official underlined the need to rebuild global order based on the values of humanity and on the observance of international law, IPN reports.

“I profited from this discussion platform for pleading once again for a ceasefire to the war waged by Russia on Ukraine, which is the biggest tragedy of this century we all live in real time. I spoke about the solidarity shown by our citizens with the Ukrainian refugees and about the importance of remaining united at national level and at European level,” stated Maia Sandu.

She considers that this is the only way for coping with the economic, energy and security crises that embraced the whole continent. The high energy and food prices are a challenge even for the strongest democracies. Urgent solutions should be identified to stop the soaring prices so that the people are not put in the situation to choose between bread and freedom.

“I also noted that we must further support Ukraine as no country in the recent history has suffered and scarified itself as Ukraine does at present. Let’s defend democracy and stop the authoritarian tendencies. Our actions today will determine our life tomorrow,” said Maia Sandu.

President Maia Sandu is paying a working visit to Athens on July 4-5. On July 6, President Sandu will visit Vilnius at the invitation of her Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nauseda. She will take part in the festivities on the occasion of the Statehood Day and will meet with high-ranking Lithuanian officials.
