The President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, fears an independent general prosecutor, which is why he wants the current Government to fall. Also, the head of state is afraid of a strong oponent for the next presidential elections, in the context in which the Sandu government has started to deliver good results. The statement belongs to the chief of the executive, Maia Sandu. According to her, for this reason Igor Dodon and the Socialists reacted with censure motion in response to the Government's decision to assume responsibility for amending the Law on Prosecutor's Office, which would allow the Prime Minister to submit a short list of candidates for the position of Prosecutor General, reports IPN.

"I think that this reaction and desire to bring down this Government comes up due to two reasons: the fear of an independent prosecutor and the fear of presidential elections and, possibly, of a strong candidate. As this Government begins to produce results (...) and I think Igor Dodon is scared that the number of these results will increase and they will be felt by more citizens, he has decided, with all his selfishness to bring down the Government, to endanger many projects and many good things that could happen to the citizens in the coming months, just to protect himself from the prosecutor and, possibly, from the presidential candidates, " declared Maia Sandu in a special edition on the public television station Moldova 1.

Maia Sanu has explained that after submitting the short list of candidates for the position of prosecutor by the prime minister, two other steps follow: the selection by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) of one of the candidates and his submission to the president of the country, then his appointment by the head of state. The chief of the executive argues that the CSP may return the prime minister's list, if it demonstrates that one person or another does not deserve to be on this list.

As regards the allegations that by this initiative she would prefer a person loyal to her, the Prime Minister says she has not committed any illegality that would make her interested in a Prosecutor General to protect her. "I am not sure if Igor Dodon can say the same thing, I do not know if he can say with certainty that he does not have to be afraid of a prosecutor general. And I think that is the point,” she stressed.

The Government's initiative came up after the Minister of Justice, Olesea Stamate, cancelled the results of the candidates' pre-selection contest for the position of Prosecutor General. After the pre-selection commission under the aegis of the Ministry announced that it had selected four candidates, accusatory information appeared in the public space regarding one of the candidates. Subsequently, Maia Sandu asked the commission to review the pre-selection result.

As a result of assuming responsibility, the Socialist Party submitted a censure motion in Parliament.
