Prime Minister Maia Sandu said she will not support the joining by mayors and councilors who formed part of the Democratic Party of the Party “Action and Solidarity”. According to her, these functionaries, if they want to run in the upcoming local elections, should do it as independents. The Premier made the statements in a program on TVC21 channel following reports that a number of local elected officials left the PDM and intend to join one of the three ruling parties – the PAS, PPDA or PSRM, IPN reports.

“We have people who encountered big difficulties while in the opposition, who helped us and built local organizations despite the pressure exerted on them and we do not think we should support such changes. I understand that these mayors probably include good people who did nothing bad, but they can run in the elections as independent candidates,” stated Maia Sandu.

The official also said she does not consider it is right to assert that the Democratic Party should be banned. If the PDM is outlawed, the international community will disagree with this. “Surely, what this party did is horrible and all those who formed part of it and didn’t stop such things are to blame. We knew that this system was bad, but what we see now as to how corrupt they were and what we hear from people who tell what happened to them is much more serious than we thought. I think they are all to blame, but I don’t believe the party should be removed,” noted Maia Sandu.

In another development, the Premier said she will pay a visit to Russia this autumn most probably, after Minister of the Interior Andrei Năstase visits Moscow first, expectedly at the start of this September.
