The presidential elections are very important. The President will be elected directly, by the people, and will thus have greater legitimacy than until now. This will be an important voice in the public debate and will represent the country in the international relations, MEP Siegfried Muresan said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN. According to him, the more credible the President is, the more he can do for the people.
Siegfried Muresan said the people in the Republic of Moldova do not have much confidence in the political class and the presidential elections are held in such a context. “We thus must look at the candidates and see who is the most upright and competent politician who, during his political life, made the lowest number of compromises and left something behind in the form of reforms in the managed ministry or in the political activity,” stated the MEP.
He noted that the EU does a lot for Moldova and it is thus important for the Moldovans to choose a candidate with a credible pro-European course. “That’s why the choice is between Missis Maia Sandu and Mister Nastase. It’s clear that Mister Dodon will not do politics for the sake of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. He will do it in his own interests. The other candidate, Mister Lupu, will do politics not for the people, but for his master. That’s why we must see who is the candidate with the best position and who has the biggest chances of defeating Mister Dodon in the runoff vote,” said the MEP.
Siegfried Muresan also said that according to the data he possesses, the two candidates, Andrei Nastase and Maia Sandu, have equal chances, but figures show that Maia Sandu has a bigger chance than Igor Dodon and Nastase’s voters will mobilize to a greater extent to support Sandu than vice versa.
Asked how the EU can react if a less credible President is elected, the MEP said that if the elections are held correctly and democratically, the President is legitimate, regardless of his/her name. However, there are Presidents with whom cooperation can be closer and others in which one cannot have confidence. But it is the outcome that will count.
