The Republic of Moldova is negotiating the gas transit with the Ukrainian side, President Maia Sandu told a news conference, quoted by IPN.

"Prime Minister Dorin Recean had discussions the previous days. Please understand, the share of gas that reaches Moldova through Ukraine represents 5% of the entire volume that is transported through the neighboring country. So, from the moment it will not be transported to other countries, Ukraine will not transport our 5%," said Maia Sandu.

The official assured that, despite the difficulties, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will not pay more for gas than they paid the previous year.

"For gas consumption, we will not pay more than last year. It is an essential measure to protect the citizens in a difficult economic period. However, as far as electricity is concerned, if the energy crisis continues, it is evident that the price will rise. We are in a period of uncertainty and the authorities are making every effort to limit the impact on the population," stated President Sandu.

The National Agency for Energy Regulation in November increased the natural gas charge by 3.4 lei to 15.5 lei per cubic meter. With VAT, the charge is 16.74 lei. The rates came into force on December 1.
