The people want the corrupt functionaries to be punished and the judges and prosecutors to professionally fulfil their obligations, Prime Minister Maia Sandu stated in the opening of a roundtable meeting entitled “Priorities of the Government in the justice sector and the fight against corruption” that was held at the Palace of the Republic on July 22, IPN reports.
According to the Government’s press service, two foreign experts in justice and anticorruption, Laura Ștefan from Romania and Eka Zguladze from Georgia, were presented in the event. “The support provided by these experts with authority in the field of the fight against corruption is very important for the Government of the Republic of Moldova and for the firm justice sector reform agenda of the new government,” it is said in the press release.
In the event, there were also initiated the first internal consultations between the Government and civil society concerning the independence of the judiciary. “Reforming the justice sector is an immediate priority of the new Government as the political control of the judicial system should be eliminated, the prosecutors should stop fulfilling political orders and the judges should serve the national interests and protect the honest citizens. Owing to the lack of an independent judiciary in Moldova during the past few years, the citizens lost confidence in the state,” Premier Sandu said in the consultations.
The discussions will continue on July 23. The event is organized in the framework of the project “Institutional support for organization development” that is implemented by the Legal Resources Center of Moldova and is financed by Sweden.
