“Now more than ever, we can move Moldova forward only through partnership”, declared President Maia Sandu at the Mayors’ Forum, held today at the Palace of the Republic.

The president stated that Moldova is at a historic moment in its evolution as a country, when it defines its role in the world. “What each of us does today shapes what kind of country we are building for the present and future generations”.

“All of the 895 recently elected mayors have been invited to this event. Over 1.2 million Moldovans have decided who will be responsible for the future of their communities. I am glad that 215 women have been elected mayors and I congratulate them for the courage to assume the role of leaders in their communities. People have shown you their trust and support. The people went out to vote with the hope that you, together with the local councilors, will work to build the villages and cities that that we can be proud of”, Maia Sandu told the attendance.

The president highlighted the legislative initiatives that support local administrations. She singled out the European Village Program, through which almost 500 projects were financed throughout the country, with a total investment value of 1.8 billion lei. In addition, the Government launched the Express European Village Program, thanks to which around 400 town halls were able to implement local development projects totaling around 172 million lei. In this context, the president asked the Government to launch the call for the European Village 2 Program as soon as possible.

“Improving living conditions is a natural thing that must be done in every locality. And when we talk about the European Union, this is exactly what we mean. Not about signing accession documents, but about funds coming in for roads, sewage, water, schools, kindergartens and other community needs. It is important to understand that without European financial aid these achievements would not have been possible. And all the big projects, such as modernized kindergartens, street lighting and water supply projects, playgrounds, renovated cultural centers, even the energy bill relief, would not have been possible without the help of our development partners and especially the European Union”, stressed Maia Sandu.

“Our common goal, mine as president and yours as local leaders, is to create strong and united communities, to improve living conditions at home and to transform all of Moldova, village by village, city by city, into one European country with a life lived in well-being and in good understanding”, the president declared.

The Mayors’ Forum, with the slogan “The Future of Local Public Administration”, is organized by the Government in partnership with the Congress of Local Authorities and under the auspices of President Maia Sandu.
