President Maia Sandu said that she hasn’t given instructions to the judiciary. At the same time, everyone knows about the acts of corruption committed in the past and those to blame for these should be held accountable. This is how Maia Sandu commented on the arrest of five former MPs, one of whom said the arrest was made on her instruction, IPN reports.

“I support the reforms and contribute to the obtaining of assistance so that we could bring things in justice in order and there is certainty that things there are done in accordance with the law. At the same time, we know about the acts of corruption committed in the past and those to blame for these acts should answer for them. My call to the judiciary is to obey the law and to their job, without abuses. They should do their job as this is what the people expect –those who committed abuses should be penalized,” President Maia Sandu said, responding to journalists’ questions in a press briefing.

Five former MPs were arrested for 72 hours on February 2. These are: Sergiu Sîrbu, Violeta Ivanov, Vladimir Vitiuc, Anatolie Zagorodnyi and Artur Reshetnikov. They are investigated for unjust enrichment, being suspected of taking bribe for switching their parliamentary groups. Artur Reshetnikov went on hunger strike, saying the arrest is abusive and illegal. “This was done on the instruction of Missis Sandu, for my earlier political activity and for my political beliefs. In protest at the fact that Moldova became a lawless state in which there is no freedom, I went on hunger strike,” stated the former MP.
