Activist Maia Laguta, who announced her intention to run independently in the mayoral elections in Chisinau, decided to stop collecting signatures in her support for being registered as a candidate. Contacted by IPN, Maia Laguta said the period offered to aspirants was reduced to 15 days and her team will be unable to gather the necessary number of signatures.
“I wrote an application and they gave me the lists in a map and informative brochures. I came home and read that we have only 15 days at our disposal. They halved the period, illegally,” stated Maia Laguta.
The activist noted that if she had known about this modification earlier, she would have constituted a larger team. “I think these regulations were adopted particularly for the purpose of preventing me from running,” she said.
Sergiu Tofilat and Silvia Radu, who also intend to run as independents, continue to collect signatures. The deadline for the submission of the required documents to the Electoral Council is April 19.
