The leader of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu said he feels sorry for Vladimir Voronin, who is a powerful, but simultaneously contradictory person. Lupu made the statement at a news conference on November 13, after he was criticized by the leader of the PCRM a day earlier.
Marian Lupu reiterated that the PDM will not beg votes from the Communists and will not agree to the formation of a center-left coalition, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The PDM is against a center-left coalition with the PCRM because this means giving absolute power to one person, to Vladimir Voronin, Marian Lupu said.
He said he realizes he would have become head of state in such a case, but he would have had no instruments for influencing the internal and foreign policy. He revealed that the PCRM asked for the posts of Head of Parliament and of Prime Minister in exchange for voting him in as President.
Marian Lupu denied Voronin's statements that the PDM does not act voluntarily, but is told what to do by foreign forces that finance the party. “This is a wrong approach by the leader of the PCRM. One should not think that the political partners are nonentities and have no convictions.”
As to the election of the head of state, both Marian Lupu and Vladimir Voronin said they are open to dialogue.
Marian Lupu also said that immediately after the Parliament sets the date of the second round of presidential elections, the Alliance for European Integration will make public a set of offers for the PCRM so as to convince them to vote in favor of his candidacy. He said the proposals will be discussed inside the Alliance first.
“I will be responsible for the fulfillment of these commitments,” Marian Lupu said, adding that he would like the entire Communist parliamentary group to vote for him, not only several Communist MPs.
Asked about the possibility of modifying the Constitution of Moldova so as to elect the head of state, Lupu said only the voting procedure can be amended at the first stage, not yet the general provisions.
