From January 1, 2024, roaming charges between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union are lower. An agreement to this effect, which was signed last year between national operators and a number of European operators, came into force on Monday, IPN reports, with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

This way, people traveling to any of the 30 countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area can benefit from significantly reduced tariffs for roaming services in the EU or can activate various advantageous options, according to the offers launched by operators in the Republic of Moldova.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed his appreciation for the joint efforts made by European officials and the Moldovan authorities, but also for the national and international operators who made this achievement possible. He declared that the reduction of roaming tariffs is a strong signal regarding the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the single European economic space.

For his part, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi spoke about the benefits of signing this agreement for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. “Lower roaming charges will have numerous advantages for citizens, for the business community and for the diaspora. I hope that this will bring the Republic of Moldova closer to the European single market. We will continue to support Moldova in the process of digitization and connection with European values and space. In these uncertain times, it is crucial to maintain security, prosperity, peace and unity”, Commissioner Várhelyi noted.

The tariff limits will be reassessed until 2025, with the possibility of extension.

According to unofficial data, about one million Moldovans are abroad, especially in the 30 countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area.
