The water supplier of Chisinau municipality informs that the losses in the water pipes decreased gradually following the repair and rehabilitation of older pipes and the optimization of pressure in the system over the last few years. Compared with 1997, the losses have halved, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau”, in 1997 the leakages were 4.5 cubic meters/hour per kilometer of pipe, but now they fell to 1.9 cubic meters/hour. This level is comparable to that recorded in large European cities. The number of leakages identified annually exceeds 12,000 cases. About 120 workers deal with their liquidation. “A leakage in large and inaccessible pipes can be removed during several hours to three days. One can do some simple calculations to see how many teams are needed to deal with the leakages so that nobody is inconvenient,” said the supplier. “Apa-Canal Chisinau” stressed that non-leaking water pipes do not exist. The inclines existing in Chisinau aggravate the situation as high pressure needs to be maintained. According to the supplier, the leakages are within the approved norms and the pumping and repair costs are included in the tariff and are not charged additionally.
