The Central Election Commission (CEC) suspended the local referendum of May 21, where the inhabitants of Sangera town and those of Dobrogea and Revaca communes were to pronounce on the building of the hazardous waste management center on the outskirts of the town, IPN reports.

The decision was taken based on the notification of the Sangera Town Council by the Chisinau local office of the State Chancellery of the violation of the legal provisions on decision making by the local public administration in connection with the initiation of the local referendum.

The Ministry of Environment informed the CEC that public consultations on the building of the hazardous waste management center were held in Sangera. As a result of these, the Ministry gave up erecting the center there and intends to identify another plot where to build this.

The Ministry plans to build a hazardous waste management center in a move to improve the management of dangerous waste in Moldova and to reduce its negative impact on the environment and human health.
